Brazilian gymnast Flavia Saraiva helped the country win its first-ever Olympic team medal in women’s gymnastics on Tuesday—while sporting a black eye.

Just before the women’s team competition at the Paris Summer Olympics began, Saraiva fell while warming up on the uneven bars. Photos showed the 24-year-old gymnast bleeding from a cut above her right eye and sporting what appeared to be a black eye. But after receiving medical aid, she returned to the competition wearing a bandage.

“I could not see, it bled, but the team’s doctor told me everything was all right,” Saraiva said, as reported by the Associated Press. “I believe my knee hit my eye when I tripped. It’s not the first time it happens to me.”

“We are warriors,” she continued.

Saraiva went on to compete in all four events—uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, and vault—for the team final.

“She’s tough,” NBC announcer Rich Lerner said during the broadcast.

Fans agreed, with many taking to social media to applaud the gymnast for her determination.

But rather than relocate, Trout preferred a paycheck the size of Tonga’s GDP.

Days before the start of March Madness, Trout’s face popped up on ESPN throughout the day, as the network’s pundits debating the merits of the deal. He was trending all day on Twitter. MLB marketing execs were surely smiling.

Palworld has come under fire for its bootleg Pokémon aesthetic, with some commenters even cross-referencing models like amateur detectives wading into a crime scene. While the claims of straight-up model ripping are unlikely (even if the designs are very clearly derivative) another strain of discussion has emerged: Is the funny Pokémon-meets-survival genre game AI?

Permit me to put on my deerstalker hat and do my best Sherlock Holmes impression—I’d include a pipe, but my smoke alarms are very sensitive. The evidence (as initially pointed out by imZaytri on Twitter/X, though I should point out that they don’t consider this concrete evidence) in favour of this accusation is as follows.

Exhibit A my dear Watson: In 2021, PocketPair’s current CEO Takuro Mizobe made a set of tweets showing astonishment at AI-generated ‘fakémon’, after Buzzfeed’s data scientist Max Woolf created a ream of the little monsters with machine learning. 

My favourite is this one, which looks like a crime against god that is begging for the sweet release of death.

The developers behind The Day Before, once upon a time Steam’s second most-wishlisted game, have struck out at what they call “disinformation and lack of fact-checking” in discussions about the game. In post made to Twitter last night, Fntastic said that “Disinformation needs to be dealt with as it can not only harm us but also other indies and small/medium studios,” and highlighting the negative “mental impact on the members of such teams” that disinfo can have.

Fntastic doesn’t say which disinformation, specifically, it’s talking about, but it isn’t too hard to guess. After a long train of strange mishaps involving a bizarre trademark dispute, an 8-month delay, and accusations of copied game trailers, it’s not hard to find people online that have concluded the game is some kind of scam. I suspect it’s precisely those rumours that Fntastic is obliquely addressing here.

It doesn’t seem to have helped. The responses to Fntastic’s tweet weren’t exactly won over by the studio’s intervention, with many of them engaging in mockery or straight-up accusing the devs of lying. Indie studio Strange Scaffold’s motto is “Better, Faster, Cheaper, and Healthier.” Two of those are subjective, but I can say for sure that the developer is quantifiably living up to the “faster” and “cheaper” parts of its mantra. Less than a year after releasing Max Payne-inspired shooter El Paso: Elsewhere, it announced a new “short form” FPS called I Am Your Beast at today’s PC Gaming Show.

This one is less Max Payne, more Hotline Miami, although it’s 3D and takes place outdoors in the Alaskan wilderness. I mention the top-down indie classic because of I Am Your Beast’s emphasis on chaining together rapid takedowns, as well as the driving beat urging its hero forward.

In I Am Your Beast, we’ll “infinitely combine different traversal mechanics, weapons, situations, and more” in a “lightning-quick hunt-the-hunters action fantasy,” says the studio.

In the trailer shown at the PC Gaming Show, embedded above, we see hero Alphonse Harding stalking, shooting, knifing, and gun-boomeranging a series of isolated guards. (I’m using “gun-boomeranging” to describe throwing your gun at someone’s head and then catching it when it bounces back.)

The world of cooperative horde shooter Deep Rock Galactic is getting adapted to a new setting: A survivors-style auto-horde-shooter where a single dwarf takes on the buggy hordes all on their own. The trailer for Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor dropped today alongside a Steam page and a loose Early Access release date of “2023.”

The spinoff will release into Early Access, where it promises to have four characters, 30-some guns, 10 or so enemies, 1-3 bosses, and 3-5 biomes to explore in the same mission-based extraction gameplay that has you escape with your loot to buy permanent upgrades for future missions. Perhaps the most intriguing bit is that you’ll still be mining stuff and that it’ll still have the same kind of procedural cave generation that Deep Rock Galactic is known for. 

“Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor is a single player survivor-like auto-shooter,” says the very excited game description. “Wield the full arsenal of Deep Rock Galactic, take on hordes of lethal aliens, mine riches, and unlock powerful upgrades. It’s one dwarf against all of Planet Hoxxes!”

In case we needed more evidence that the world cannot get enough Stardew Valley, creator Eric Barone shared a piece of early community center concept art on Twitter, and fans immediately began clamoring for more photos.

An image purportedly leaked from a pre-release build of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has revealed that the game will feature both a battle pass and an in-game store, and some followers of the game are not happy about it.

The image, which initially appeared on 4chan, clearly shows “Battle Pass” and “Store” dropdown menus, as well as what appears to be multiple types of in-game currencies. That’s fairly standard stuff for competitive free-to-play games, but Suicide Squad is a solo joint, with support for drop-in/drop-out co-op play. Pricing hasn’t been officially announced yet, but it’s expected to be in line with conventional premium game releases: UK retailer Game, for instance, is currently offering Suicide Squad for preorder for £70.

What appears to be contributing to some of the furor is the lack of information about how Suicide Squad will play. No substantial gameplay footage has been released; for players who were expecting a singleplayer campaign in the style of Arkham City, having a monetization scheme announced via leak has challenged expectations.

In a recent interview, Star Wars: Outlaws game director Mathias Karlson and narrative director Navid Khavari sat down with GameSpot to dish out some more details on the upcoming open world Star Wars game. They give the impression of new character Kay Vess as an up-and-coming, Han Solo-style character diving into the galaxy’s underworld at one of the darkest points in the movie timeline.

If Vess’ snappy space jacket, quirky nonhuman companion, and chunky junker of a starship didn’t clue you in, Outlaws is trying to be the Star Wars scoundrel game, much like how 1313 (RIP) was supposed to be the definitive bounty hunter send-up. “We got excited about this ‘scoundrel fantasy,'” Khavari told Gamespot. “And when you think of scoundrels and what era this could fit in between, well, in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, there’s this civil war consuming the galaxy.

“To enter into the underworld within that window felt like a perfect starting point for someone like Kay and for the Player.”
